Bronny James, son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, will be allowed to return to the basketball court in the very near future after going into cardiac arrest during training in July, the James family said in a statement.

The point guard suffered cardiac arrest from a congenital heart defect, which was identified after an initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic.

The James family said in the statement: “This is an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect that can and will be treated.”

“We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and his return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to the media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”

Bronny’s evaluating physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was Dr. Merije Chukumerike. Subsequent evaluations at the Mayo Clinic and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center were led by Michael J. Ackerman, MD, and Matthew W. Martinez, MD.

LeBron James and his family have requested that their privacy be respected and they will be responsible for providing updates to the media.

The eldest son of LeBron James suffered cardiac arrest on Monday, July 24 while training at the USC facilities.

“Yesterday while practicing, Bronny James went into cardiac arrest,” a spokesman for the James family said at the time.

“Medical staff were able to treat Bronny and get him to the hospital. He is now stable and is no longer in the ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and will update the media when there is more information.”

“LeBron and Savannah would like to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC athletic and medical staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”

James, 18, is entering his freshman year at USC Trojans and is ranked 20th in the ESPN 100 rankings of 2023. He is the sixth-highest ranked point guard in the class of 2023
