Third baseman Josh Donaldson is doing everything he can to return to the New York Yankees from the 60-day disabled list to help qualify a team that may already be out of the race by then.
Donaldson will be eligible to return on September 16, giving him a chance to play in the Yankees’ last 14 games. Those of New York are 9 games away from the American League wild cards and even if it seems incredible.
The third baseman took batting practice this Saturday at the team’s compound in Tampa, giving him hope of at least saying goodbye to the organization.
“Yes, he is working on a possible rehab assignment soon. So I think it’s a possibility,” manager Aaron Boone said.
“As a competitor, you want to be there and help your team as often as possible,” Donaldson said. “I don’t make those decisions, but I feel good where I am now,” he added.
Right calf injury
Donaldson suffered the injury on a ground ball in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver.
Previously, the third baseman was sidelined with a right hamstring strain from April 5 to June 2.
Donaldson is earning $21 million dollars in the framework of a season in which he shows an offensive line of .142 batting average, with 10 home runs and 15 RBIs, being sentenced by the Yankees board, that they will not return him for the 2024 season.
