CheapAir.com, the travel site, reported that the average lowest international airfare has risen 18% (about $168 on average per round-trip ticket) over the previous year.
No city in the US with international routes was spared from an increase. Airfares from cities in the country to international destinations have increased between 13% and 23% depending on where you live.
As if that were not enough, international air fares by region also increased.
The region with the biggest increase in airline ticket prices right now is Europe, which shows a 23% increase in flight costs over last year, so you can expect to spend close to $200 more on average what a similar ticket to Europe would have cost you a year ago.
Here’s how the rest of the international regions changed for 2023:
Europe, +23.0%
Canada, +22.4%
Asia, +21.9%
· Middle East, +20.8%
· Central America, +20.6%
South America, +20.3%
Caribbean, +17.9%
· Africa, +17.1%
Mexico +14.8%
And to get cheap international flights, CheapAir.com has the following recommendations:
1. The best way to get a good international airfare is to book early. This helps increase your chances of getting one of the lowest rates.
2. Remember that seasonality and events can affect the prices of international airfare. Destinations in the northern hemisphere are most popular in June, July and August, while the good weather in the southern hemisphere is usually in December, January and February. Global sporting events like soccer and even local festivals can also affect the costs of flights to a destination.
3. Book your flights on CheapAir’s Prime booking window for better airfare prices, which provides a breakdown of when you should buy those international flights this year.
4. Consider managing startup costs with monthly payments, as these can help travelers defer the startup costs of international travel and pay over time. International airline tickets can often represent the most expensive part of your budget.
5. CheapAir.com protects your airfare with the free Price Drop Payback program, which gives you back up to $100 per ticket, should your international airfare drop after purchase.
