A teenager was killed and several other people were injured after a shooting broke out in the middle of a football game at an Oklahoma high school on Friday, police said.
The incident occurred at Choctaw High School in the third quarter of the game against Del City High School, police said.
Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said the shooting may have stemmed from an argument between two men that led to the unfortunate incident in the stadium’s visitor’s box.
As a result, a 16-year-old teenager was shot in the groin and later died of his injuries, police said Saturday. His identity has not been released by the authorities, but it was revealed that the victim did not study at school.
Also, two people received gunshot wounds and were taken to a local hospital. A 42-year-old man who was shot in the chest is in stable condition in the intensive care unit, Marshall added, while a woman was shot in the thigh, being treated and released.
Meanwhile, two female victims, believed to be students, were shot as they tried to flee, sustaining broken wrists and a broken leg, Choctaw police said.
No arrests have been reported, but one person of interest remains at large. The Uvalde Children’s Foundation offered a financial reward for key information leading to the arrest.
“In a stadium full of spectators and students, someone knows something. Do the right thing and say something,” said the national director of the Uvalde Children’s Foundation, Daniel Chapin, in a statement.
Marshall said he will meet with school officials Saturday to provide advice and discuss new safety measures for students and spectators.
“We are determined to resolve this senseless act and restore a sense of safety to our community,” Marshall said.
