Russia said Sunday it had sent a fighter jet to deter a US air force reconnaissance drone from crossing its borders over the Black Sea.
“As the Russian fighter approached, the foreign reconnaissance UAV made a U-turn and moved away from the state border of the Russian Federation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The Black Sea is the scene of an increase in tensions since Russia withdrew in mid-July from the agreement that allowed Ukrainian grains to be exported through the country’s southern ports from mid-2022.
In recent months, there have been numerous incidents between Russian and Western planes and drones in the Black and Baltic seas.
One of the most prominent took place in March, when an American Reaper drone crashed in the Black Sea after the intervention of a Russian fighter.
