A Frontier League game in New York suffered a 61-minute delay during the first inning as a result of an altercation that led to the ejection of a player and an umpire.
Umpire ejections are very rare in baseball games, but that was exactly the case during Sunday’s Frontier League game between the New York Boulders and the Tri-City ValleyCats.
Tucker Nathans, Boulders player Tucker Nathans was sent off by referee Warren Nicholson, tempers flared between the two, who got into a shouting match. Things escalated and Nicholson ended up initiating physical contact with the player, which led to the ejection of the first base umpire.
Footage showed Nicholson walking off the field over the center field fence, and another umpire who lives near the stadium, Lou DeLuise, had to fill in for him.
The delay lasted for over an hour before play resumed. The Boulders won the match 2-1. And there was a “small struggle” between the two teams near the home bench after the conclusion of the match.
Total lack of control
“It is unfortunate. It was not a good time for the league. It was an embarrassing moment and it never should have happened,” Boulders team president Shawn Reilly said.
Reilly also seemed to take a not-so-subtle jab at ValleyCats coach Pete Incaviglia, who played 12 seasons in the majors.
“It really didn’t have to happen, and it’s all because of these ridiculous pitch cheating allegations that Pete makes every year this time of year,” Reilly said.
And he stressed: “I think it’s a shame for the Frontier League and I think Tri-City is a first-class organization. But I don’t have much patience for that behavior. It makes the refs think we’re cheating.”
“We do not do it. I find it incredibly offensive to accuse my organization of cheating ”she closed.
