The decomposing body of a 53-year-old man was discovered by police inside his Staten Island apartment after a neighbor called 911 to report a foul odor, authorities said Monday.

Officials are investigating the incident as a homicide, as the victim had puncture wounds to his upper torso and detectives suspect he was stabbed, the Daily News reported.

So far the New York Police Department has not revealed more details of this alleged crime on Staten Island.

The finding was made after officers responded to a 911 call at 12:40 a.m. Sunday about a foul odor coming from inside an apartment in the Arlington Terrace complex on Holland Avenue in nearby Richmond Terrace. in Marines Harbor, The Bronx.

The victim was found lifeless face up with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and was identified as 45-year-old Cindy Maxwell.

“Upstairs it smelled like 200 dead rats,” said a neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “When leaving the elevator there was a really unpleasant smell. I had to locate that smell and called”, who complained of the unpleasant stench for two days.

A resident said he heard four shots last Wednesday, but authorities went to a different building in the apartment complex, perhaps because of the way the sound resonates through the housing development.

The New York City Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
