The suspect in a mass shooting at the Chape Hill campus of the University of North Carolina (UNC) was finally arrested after an arduous police search following the incidents that left one dead, who was a faculty member.
In a press conference Monday night, UNC Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz said the suspect was detained by police, but also confirmed that a faculty member was killed.
“It saddens me to report that one of our faculty members was killed in this shooting,” the chancellor said in a message to the entire campus. “We are awaiting confirmation that next of kin have been contacted before sharing any further information.”
So far, the police have not released the names of the victim or the shooter during the press conference.
Just after 1:00 pm, this Monday, the faculty had issued an emergency alert for an “armed and dangerous” person on campus, and asked citizens to enter the building and avoid the windows.
A local NBC station noted that there was a massive presence of police and emergency vehicles near the building.
Initially, there were reports that a suspect was in custody, but at 2:35 pm UNC police advised that the person of interest had not been located, and their image was released.
“This photo shows a person of interest in the current situation of armed and dangerous people. If you see this person, keep your distance, put his safety first, and call 911,” the post noted.
At 3:15 p.m., an alert was issued saying that all UNC classes and events were canceled for the rest of the day, but an hour later police said they could resume, and moments later the incident was reported. arrest.
