Grandma Jean Dolores Schmidt, popularly known as Sister Jean, stood out this Monday during the game between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers by throwing the first pitch despite being 104 years old.
Sister Jean captivated everyone on social networks when she appeared in the middle of Chicago’s Wrigley Field in her wheelchair and with a ball in hand.
What the public, who received her with warm applause, did not expect, is that the Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary made the inaugural pitch.
Wearing a Chicago Cubs shirt emblazoned with ‘Sister Jean,’ she threw out and was greeted by the team’s mascot, celebrating the day after her birthday on Aug. 27.
Although many saw Grandma Jean for the first time on the mound of Wrigley Field, the truth is that her popularity began thanks to NCAA basketball, when she went on to constantly support the Loyola Ramblers.
The team adopted Sister Jean as a charm of sorts during their internship for the 2018 NCAA season when they reached the Final Four at March Madness, though they ultimately fell short of the title.
Since then, Sister Jean has become an icon of the city of Chicago and her activities are often followed by her fans.
