After having had a stage to forget with Real Madrid, the Belgian Eden Hazard, considered by many to be one of the greatest talents of this generation, would be close to announcing his premature retirement from football, as indicated this Monday by ‘Footmercato ‘ and it was confirmed shortly after by the British media ‘Mail Sport’.
The one who was considered a Belgian star, became a free agent on June 30 after ending his relationship by mutual agreement with Madrid, a team he joined in 2019 with one of the great figures of the time after shining for several years in the Chelsea FC of the Premier League.
Since his arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu, things did not start well since he arrived overweight in his first preseason, something that immediately generated mistrust in the coaching staff, which at that time was led by Zinedine Zidane.
But to this were added multiple and constant injuries of all kinds that led him to spend more time on the disabled list than with the rest of the squad, to the point that, between June 2019 and June 2023, he barely managed to play 76 games in which he scored just 7 goals.
These numbers stand in striking contrast to those left behind at Chelsea, where health and great talent combined to see him appear in 352 appearances scoring 110 goals between June 2012 and June 2023.
And it is that the career of the Belgian international has been on the rise since he made his debut with Lille in Ligue 1 in 2006. In the French team he played 188 commitments scoring 48 goals, without being a born striker since he also worked as an attacking midfielder.
The highest point of his career was experienced between 2017 and 2019 when he was among the finalists for FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award along with Argentine star Leo Messi and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo.
The captain of the Belgian national team is currently a free agent, although since his departure from Real Madrid a few months ago, rumors spread that several clubs were interested in giving him a chance, including MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps, Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia and the French Lille, Nice and Olympique de Marseille.
