An Indiana man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for murdering his neighbor in 2021; allegedly, the dispute began “because both claimed a piece of land.”
Randy Small, 58, was sentenced last Monday, just over a month after being found guilty of the murder of Robert Adair, 70, in Brown County, Indiana, Law and Crime reports.
Both Small and Adair lived on a piece of land that barely contained four houses, according to Law and Crime.
According to People, for months the two men had argued, as each claimed a piece of land as his own.
Adair had a mailbox in that area for the past few years, Kelly Pyle, one of the killer’s attorneys, told the outlet.
After weeks of discussions, the homicide occurred on September 15, 2021, according to WBIW, for which Small was charged with murder the next day, online jail records cited by the outlet show. Small claimed “self defense” in the case.
The media later reported that the victim’s body was not found until 10 hours later; it should be noted that an hour-long standoff ensued between Small and local authorities.
Adair’s remains were found in his truck, where he still had his foot on the brake with his hands “peacefully folded in his lap,” Law and Crime reported.
According to court records, Small was held without bail and pleaded not guilty following the 2021 incident, however a jury found him guilty in July of this year.
The murderer’s defense attorney, Andrew Joseph Baldwin, will appeal the sentence and request a new trial, according to People.
