Two of the greatest sportsmen in history, Lionel Messi and Novak Djokovic met for dinner last week in New York City. Messi was in the ‘Big Apple’ on the occasion of his debut in the MLS against the New York Red Bulls, while the Serbian disputes the US Open 2023.
The GOATs meeting was published with a photograph of Jorge Mas, owner of Inter Miami. While Novak Djokovic himself, who recounted that the two legends spoke in a short talk, lasting just 15 minutes and with both wanting to meet again.
“Messi is a phenomenon,” launched the 36-year-old, the same age as the Argentine soccer player. “The first time I met Lionel was before Roland Garros and I went to see a Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) game. The second time was now, in New York. We talked for 15 minutes, about the family, everything about life. I would like to meet him again to talk about sport because of his mentality. He is a huge champion. I have a lot of respect for him,” Nole said in impeccable Spanish in dialogue with ESPN.
Now after their second meeting, two of the best athletes in history were left wanting to continue talking with what they consider a legend and an example of dedication and excellence on the courts.
Nole Djokovic is still in New York in search of one more Grand Slam title, the US Open, while Messi, that weekend he met Djokovic, came on as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Red Bulls New York, team he scored against in the 89th minute to continue his romance with the goal in this new stage of his career.
Djokovic unstoppable at the US Open
In his first two duels, the Serbian tennis player has given up 11 games to penalties. After eliminating the Frenchman Alexandre Muller on the opening day, with a score of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, the 23-time champion became strong this Wednesday against the Spanish Bernabé Zapata, victim, 6-4 , 6-1 and 6-1.
Said meeting meant the return of the Balkan to the day session of the US Open in which he had debuted on the first day under the spotlight at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Djokovic’s path to the final of the 2023 United States Open will continue in the third round where he will meet his compatriot Laslo Djere, number 38 on the ATP lists.
