The New York Yankees have had a bad season and without a doubt rookie Anthony Volpe has been one of the few good news, thanks to his offensive contribution, which has led him to inscribe his name in the history of the Bronx team.
The rookie shortstop made his debut in March, so he’s already had considerable time in the majors to be included in the rookie pool. However, it has had the opportunity to increase its projections with what was done in 2023.
Volpe hit his 20th home run of the season, hitting a 96-mile sinker 341 feet 99 miles to right field at Comerica Park.
In addition, he has 20 stolen bases and for this reason he became the first rookie in the history of the New York Yankees with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single Major League season.
The Yankees rookie is also the third shortstop with a 20-20 season in history. The other two are Bobby With Jr and Nomar Garciaparra. Volpe is the 15th rookie with a year of decent magnitude, and the second to do so this year, the other being Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Volpe has a .707 OPS below expectations, let’s not forget that it’s his first season and he has excelled in one way or another in areas like speed, power and defense on an irregular basis.
Tigers defeated Yankees
The Detroit Tigers took a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday to salvage the final game of the series at Comerica Park.
The Yankees were seeking their first four-game winning streak of the season since late May. But instead they suffered their ninth final at-bat loss so far this season.
Volpe’s aforementioned home run was the Yankees’ only damage to the Tigers’ pitching. Beau Brieske (1-2) retired the top half of the 10th inning and Jonathan Loáisiga (0-1) worked the bottom half for New York.
Josh Donaldson signed with Brewers
Entering the final month of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers are in position to clinch their second division title in the last three years. For this reason, the club announced Thursday that it has signed Donaldson to a minor league contract. The 37-year-old will report to Triple-A Nashville and be eligible for the Brewers’ postseason roster, should they advance there, since he signed before the end of August.
The addition comes two days after Donaldson was released by the Yankees in the midst of an injury-plagued season. He’s hitting just .142 with a .659 OPS in 34 games this year. He has been sidelined with a right calf strain since mid-July and will not be eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list until September 15.
