The Mexican boxer and current undisputed super middleweight champion, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, announced a couple of weeks ago that he intends to remain active in the ring until 2028, understanding that his competition rate has decreased in recent years, somewhat which he admitted due to his current age and for which he has been working little by little to be able to maintain sufficient earnings that allow him to enjoy his retirement without any problem.

Faced with this imminent moment in which he will have to hang up his gloves, the man from Guadalajara has been forging a plan with which he will be able to receive large resources without the need to be on top of a ring and for some time he opened a business that promises to be a multimillion dollar to be able to continue enjoying all the luxuries of a champion.

“We need to have something outside of boxing, because there will come a time when you will retire and you will need to have other things to do and spend your mornings,” said Canelo Álvarez during an interview offered a few days ago to BoxingScene.com to refer to the importance of investing the money that is earned within boxing and not spending it on items that will simply generate a long-term expense.

Some of the ventures that Saúl Álvarez has carried out to be able to venture into the business world have been the creation of the Canelo Energy gas stations, the Upper self-service stores, taquerías, a sportswear brand, his own promoting company and finally a brand of RTD (‘ready to drink’) drinks called VMC, which was launched this week in the United States.

“I am very proud that Mexico is coming to the United States, which for me represents a Mexican celebration. For my compas from California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona or New Mexico, you can now find the VMC brand in your favorite liquor store”, explained the man from Guadalajara when talking about each of his brands.

“When you stop boxing, boxing money stops and you still want to spend what you spend now. So you need other companies that give you the same lifestyle. That’s why it’s necessary [invertir en] a business to maintain their lifestyle. I come from nothing and I don’t want to be in that situation again. I risk my life every time I fight. Now I can do my business and support my family in a good position. That is what I think every time I need to invest in a business… That is why I put everything together for VMC”, she concluded in the interview.

The truth is that despite these plans, Canelo Álvarez will face off on September 30 in the city of Las Vegas against the American Jermell Charlo; In this fight, the Mexican will make his undisputed super middleweight title available to him to show that he continues to be among the elite of the sport.
