Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, Mexican Red Bull driver, was satisfied after free practice for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, despite the mistake he suffered at the end of the second session, which caused red flags.
Checo said that those in Monza have been the best practices he has experienced in a long time and claimed that the loss of control in the RB19 occurred when he touched the ground of the parabola in the last corner of the circuit.
“I substeered at the start and tried to keep it pinned. I thought I had it under control, but then I just hit the ground and it’s game over”, declared the driver from Guadalajara at the end of the session.
Pérez highlighted: “it doesn’t seem so serious, it seems quite small, so I don’t think we lost anything at the end, nothing representative in that sense”.
And he assured that he has been comfortable during practice, so he is confident of obtaining a good result at the end of the weekend.
“The positive thing is that the car is working well, I feel comfortable with it and I think we are in a good position for the rest of the weekend. I really felt that we had a very strong Friday, ”said the man from Guadalajara.
Given this, he was blunt in stating that “it has been the best Friday in a long time. We have been working very hard. I think we found some positive steps in the car, so I hope I can show it tomorrow and on Sunday”, he concluded.
Red flag for Checo’s accident
Checo Pérez lost control of his RB19 when he was passing the Parabolica, the final part of the Monza circuit, home of the Italian race. The car went into the sand trap before hitting the rear of the crash barrier.
The crash damaged the rear wing and forced the car to stop in the area due to being trapped in the sand area.
The Mexican had set the fastest time in the opening stint on the soft tires before being passed by Norris and Sainz.
The session restarted with four minutes left with no change to the times as the teams were already working through the race simulations on the medium tyres.
