Carlos Alcaraz defeated the British Daniel Evans with a 6-2, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 victory this Saturday, in what could be said, his first match in which he had to go to great lengths to come out ahead in a Ashe stadium completely packed.

In the first set Alcaraz took a 5-1 lead, but Evans made him work hard to break his serve. Evans saved six (of eight) break points, but Alcaraz’s net game was superior.

In the second set, Alcaraz broke Evans’ serve three times, but Alcaraz still needed three set points to break Evans out of position and hit a light volley to close out the set on 49 minutes.

In the third set, both players held serve until the seventh game. On Alcaraz’s serve, Evans’ first break point included some play between the legs, sharp angles and point-generating shots that could be the best yet of the tournament, but Alcaraz won the rally to make it 30-40. .

Evans was much more incisive going forward to then lead the set for the first time, 4-3. Later, leading 5-4, Evans dropped two set points on serve from him, and a third, then a fourth. Evans finally won fifth set point when Alcaraz returned serve from the rim of his racket. He marked the first set that Alcaraz lost in this year’s tournament.

In the fourth set, Alcaraz moved ahead, 4-2, breaking Evans and punctuating a 12-shot comeback with a running forehand that landed just inside the baseline by millimeters.

Leading 5-3, Alcaraz opened his service game with a pair of aces. He got to 40 points with a lob over Evans and won the match with a forehand cross.

“Evans is a tough opponent. I am very, very happy to go to the fourth round. We made great points they made us smile. It’s fantastic to see that on a tennis court,” reigning champion Alcaraz said on the court at Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz reaches the fourth round of the US Open for the third consecutive year, in three attempts, while Evans will leave his seventh US Open unable to improve on his 2021 result, when he reached the fourth round but lost to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
