A Michigan officer performed a heroic rescue, saving the life of a baby who was not breathing during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Warren Police Department Officer Brendan Fraser pulled over a Chevrolet Camaro for speeding and found the driver, who was the uncle of an 18-month-old baby who was turning blue with rolling eyes.

According to dash cam footage, the driver handed the baby to Fraser and begged her to help him. “Help, help, we have a dying baby here,” the man yelled, as the child’s mother was also crying.

Fraser acted quickly and began giving the boy back blows in hopes of clearing his airway. Subsequently, she tried to keep the child’s mother and her brother at ease from her.

“He’s breathing, look at him, he’s fine,” Fraser said, when the boy spat some kind of liquid and his lips regained color, in statements collected by Fox 2.

According to Fraser, at first he thought the driver was racing someone or trying to get away from something, but then he understood that he was headed for the nearest hospital, which was about three-quarters of a mile away. “It was certainly a huge relief,” Fraser said, as the boy began to breathe.

It is not clear what was wrong with the boy, but he was able to recover after first responders took him to hospital. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer praised Fraser’s actions in a statement.

“Officer Fraser’s actions at this traffic stop are nothing short of heroic. This incident demonstrates that police work and traffic stops are not always about issuing tickets or making arrests,” Dwyer said.
