Although the federal minimum wage is $7.50 per hour, in force for more than 10 years, 30 states in the country and the District of Columbia announced an increase, which in the case of Illinois will be $14 per hour.
And it is that the minimum wage in Illinois is currently $13 dollars per hour for those over 18 years of age, while for those under 18 years of age it is $10.50 dollars per hour.
Tipped workers are paid $7.80 per hour, those under 18 are paid $6.30 per hour.
Each entity set its own date for the new state minimum wage to take effect, for some it will be from January 1, 2024, others in July and some will wait until September of next year to put it into effect.
Some justify the increase in the minimum wage linked to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), to face inflation.
While in other states, local congresses have the power to set their own minimum wages, which increase each year.
Some states have set minimum wages higher than the federal one, which has not seen an increase since 2009, including Illinois.
Minimum wage increase per year
In February 2019, the Illinois local congress approved increasing the minimum wage each year as follows:
- 2020 $9.2 per hour and $10 per hour
- 2021 $11 per hour
- 2022 $12 per hour
- 2023 $13 per hour
But by January 1, 2024, the Illinois minimum wage will increase to $14 per hour.
While for January 2025, the minimum wage will be $15 dollars.
