Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential hopeful and former ambassador to the United Nations, was one of the participants in the first Republican Debate who said she would support former US President Donald Trump as the 2024 Republican nominee for president even in the event of that he was convicted of any of the multiple legal proceedings against him.

Despite this, this Sunday, Haley indicated that she was sure that this scenario would not materialize, since she considered that no one would vote for Trump in the event that he was convicted.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Haley said she was confident the American people would not vote for Trump if he is convicted.

“First of all, he is innocent until proven guilty,” Haley said when asked if he would vote for Trump even if he is convicted. “But you are implying that the American people are not smart. The American people are not going to vote for a convicted criminal. The American people are going to vote for someone who can win a general election. I have faith in the American people. They know what they have to do,” Haley said.

The also former governor of South Carolina added that: “I think so, I will always support the Republican nominee and I will make sure that person is capable of defeating a ‘President Kamala Harris.’ Because we can’t have a Kamala Harris President or we will never get our country back.”

Haley said the respective comment to “President Kamala Harris” because, as she has reiterated on several occasions, she does not believe that President Joe Biden will conclude his presidential term if he is re-elected in 2024.

In the interview, Haley described this demonstration in support of Trump on stage as simply a reflection of a group of candidates who did not want to break their signed commitment to endorse the final nominee.

“What you saw in that scenario were candidates who said they would do exactly what they signed on to and promised to do, which is endorse the Republican nominee,” Haley said. “That is what we are saying. I don’t think President Trump is the nominee. I think it will be me. But I will tell you that any Republican is better than what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are doing.”
