After two weeks in which the environment of the Spanish soccer team had not issued a single comment on the controversy between Luis Rubiales and Jenni Hermoso and only the striker Borja Iglesias had expressed his rejection of the action, it was this Monday when the captains of the combined finally condemned his gesture.
In a press conference regarding the Euro 2024 Qualifiers, the captains of Spain Álvaro Morata, César Azplicueta, Marco Asensio and Rodri set a position with a statement on what the squad thinks about Rubiales’ non-consensual kiss towards Hermoso later to the World Cup that Red won in the last Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 2023.
However, the one who took the microphones to make known the point of view of those called up to the selection was Morata himself, who took over the captaincy after the withdrawal of the Red side Jordi Alba.
“We want to reject what we consider to be unacceptable behavior on the part of Mr. Rubiales, who has not lived up to the institution he represents,” was Morata’s statement, who was the first to speak before the media.
Morata then expressed what in his opinion should be the values that identify the team, adding that Rubiales himself should be the main representation of conduct for being in charge of the Federation.
After censoring Rubiales’ behavior, the players asked the media to stop this issue and focus on the two key qualifying matches for Euro 2024, which Spain faces against Georgia and Cyprus.
“Starting today, we face a decisive concentration for the future of Spanish football on our way to qualifying for Euro2024 with two games against Georgia and Cyprus. We would like, from now on, to be able to focus on sporting issues given the relevance of the challenges that lie ahead”, concluded the Atlético de Madrid striker.
