An unfortunate situation occurred in the match between Serbia and South Sudan in the close of the group stage of the Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia 2023. In the middle of a dispute for the ball, the Serbian Borisa Simanić received a nudge by the South Sudanese Nuni Omot, generating an unfortunate outcome for the Serb.
As reported by the Serbian basketball federation in a statement, Simanić underwent surgery at the Makati Medical Center hospital in Manila in the early morning of August 31 after suffering the blow, but “the doctors controlled the postoperative recovery and decided that, due to complications , a new operation was necessary”.
“About the new operation and the state of health of Borisa Simanić, the doctor of the Serbian national team, prof. Dr. Dragan Radovanović said that due to complications to the damaged kidney that occurred postoperatively, Borisa Simanić underwent another operation on September 3. Due to changes in the vitality of the kidney tissue, it was necessary to surgically remove the entire kidney,” the Serbian federation explained on its X (formerly Twitter) social network account.
In this way, Simanić, a player for Casademont Zaragoza in the Spanish league, will miss the remainder of the World Cup and will continue to recover in the hospital after the operation in which a kidney was removed.
Italy, Serbia, Lithuania, the United States, Germany, Slovenia, Canada and Latvia are the qualifiers for the quarterfinals of the Basketball World Cup, an instance that will be played on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 September.
