After falling off a 100-foot cliff, a driver clung to life inside his wrecked pickup truck for five days in the southern California expanse.

The story culminated in a rescue operation led by state firefighters, who devised a system of human pulleys to pull the survivor out of the ravine.

As reported by ABC, the dangerous experience began in the middle of the rugged terrain of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, southern California.

A critical turning point came last Saturday at approximately 10:58 am local time when a vigilant 911 caller reported the presence of a hidden vehicle at the base of a steep ravine.

This ravine stretched along a two-lane highway, weaving its way between the cities of Arvin and Stallion Springs, as recounted in an incident report from the Kern County Fire Department, cited by ABC.

Arriving at the scene, responding firefighters found a severely damaged pickup truck with a single occupant perched precariously at the base of the 100-foot cliff.

In particular, more than 20 firefighters came together for the critical rescue operation, including four engine teams, six fire patrol units and a dedicated urban search and rescue team.

To meet the challenge, fire crews quickly created a rope rescue system. The design allowed them to extend their reach and gain access to the driver.

A video released by the fire department captured their coordinated efforts: dozens of firefighters, shoulder to shoulder on a dusty road over the ravine, clutching a rope tightly.

Suspended from this lifeline, a rescuer descended to reach the stranded vehicle.

“The patient was injured and had been immobilized at the bottom of the ravine since Tuesday, August 29,” according to the incident report.

The survivor, whose identity is not revealed in the report, endured a five-day ordeal immobilized at the bottom of the ravine, dating back to Tuesday, August 29.

Using the same rope rescue system, three additional rescuers descended into the ravine, cleverly securing the driver inside a sturdy basket.

The rescue culminated in the transfer of the driver by helicopter to a nearby hospital. While the injuries were substantial, they were classified as not life-threatening.
