The German Julian Nagelsmann was confirmed as the new technical director of the German football team, as confirmed this Friday by the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB, German Football Federation) in a statement.

After local media reported that Nagelsmann was going to be the successor to Hansi Flick, who was dismissed on September 10, the 36-year-old coach signed a contract with the DFB this Friday until July 31, 2024.

In this way, the former Bayern Munich coach became the twelfth coach in the history of the German national team.

Two days after Flick’s dismissal, DFV sporting director Rudi Völler and coaches Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner led the national team to a 2-1 home (Dortmund) friendly victory against France.

The DFB announced that Wagner “will continue to support Nagelsmann as an assistant in the future and Benjamin Glück will be the other assistant coach of the national team.”

Speaking to the DFB press team, Nagelsmann recalled that the Mannschaft has “a European Championship in our own country. That is something special, something that happens every few decades (…) I have a great desire to celebrate.”

“We are convinced that Julian Nagelsmann, as national coach, will ensure that the national team inspires its fans and that the European Championship is also a sporting success (…) Nagelsmann is an excellent coach who faces his new task with the greatest motivation. Now, we will all focus on next summer’s tournament and support Julian Nagelsmann as best we can,” DFB President Bernd Neuendorf declared on his side.

Nagelsmann’s first challenge is scheduled to be his visit to the United States, where they will compete against that country’s national team on October 14 and against the Gold Cup champion, Mexico, on October 17.
