After a month of intense fighting off the field of play, the Spanish team beat Sweden in the last breath (2-3) on the first day of the Women’s Nations League in a high-level, important and very difficult match for the brand new world champions.

This was the team’s first commitment since winning the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the subsequent crisis after the non-consensual kiss of the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, to the player Jennifer Hermoso during the celebration of the championship.

Spain took the initiative at the beginning of the match, although Sweden gradually took control thanks to its physical power and greater intensity. And they went ahead midway through the first half with a goal from Eriksson. But Montse Tomé’s players did not give up and Athenea del Castillo equalized before the break.

The time in the locker room was good for the Spanish team, captained again by Irene Paredes and Alexia Putellas, and they began to generate chances very frequently. The second goal, a great goal, came through Eva Navarro, who came on as a substitute, although Sweden tied with a goal from Hurtig.

And after all, Spain still had energy left, Amaiur Sarriegi caused a penalty and Mariona Caldentey, one of the best players this Friday, converted it to certify the victory at the buzzer in the 95th minute.

More layoffs in the RFEF

Before starting the match they had achieved a perhaps more important victory with the changes they have caused in the Spanish federation, a demand to which their rival joined with the anti-machismo slogan #SeAcabó.

On the other hand, the RFEF announced this Friday the dismissal of its Integrity Director.

The federation dismissed “the services of the Integrity Director, Miguel García Caba,” the organization said in a publication on X.

The RFEF did not provide further information about the decision.

The Spanish ended their boycott of the national team earlier this week after the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) pledged to make immediate changes to its structure.
