WalletHub, the site specialized in economic and financial information, analyzed the best and worst states for American women in 2023, leaving Vermont and Oklahoma at the extremes of the list.

“In 2023, women in some parts of the United States will still bear the brunt, even as they outnumber men in most states,” the WalletHub report says. “For example, women represent more than two-thirds of all minimum wage workers in the United States. Their political representation is also affected, since women represent almost 51% of the American population, but only 24% of the Senate and 28% of the House of Representatives.

To determine how women are faring and where they can find the best opportunities relative to where they live, WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia on two key dimensions: “Women’s economic and social well-being” and “ Medical care and safety of women.

The data set covers 25 key indicators, from the median income of female workers to preventive healthcare and the female homicide rate.

Each metric was scored on a 100-point scale, where a score of 100 represents the most favorable conditions for women.

It then determined the weighted average for each state and the District across all metrics to calculate its overall score and rank the states.

Economic and social well-being: 2
Health care and safety: 3
