The stoppage of trains to northern Mexico has left hundreds of undocumented migrants, most of them Venezuelans, stranded. They are in the Mexican city of Nuevo León and hope to move to the border to cross into US territory to request humanitarian asylum.
The operations of dozens of cargo units were paralyzed since Tuesday by Ferromex, the largest railway operator in the country, due to the accelerated increase in foreigners who were concentrated in various areas of Mexico waiting to board them, subjecting themselves to endless dangers.
Specifically, they are on the limits of the El Carmen and Escobedo municipalities, from where they plan to continue towards the border of Piedras Negras and Coahuila to cross into US territory.
Among the hundreds of migrants stranded in Mexico there are complete families, who have minors and pregnant women under their care, EFE noted.
They have formed an improvised camp, where they endure high temperatures, thirst, hunger and also the “abuse” of the police. This was declared by the Venezuelan migrant José Ángel.
He said that they remain near the Ferromex tracks with the hope that operations will resume at some point.
In recent years, the Beast train network or the Death Train has served as transportation for thousands of undocumented immigrants trying to reach the United States.
The company indicated in a statement that 60 trains, equivalent to the capacity of 1,800 trucks, will be temporarily stopped on routes to the north of the country.
He recalled that in recent days about half a dozen “unfortunate cases of injuries or deaths” were recorded among the groups that deal with the units. This, despite the serious danger that this implies.
