Atlético de Madrid beat Real Madrid 3-1 in what was the first Madrid Derby of the 2023-2024 LaLiga EA Sports season. With goals from Álvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann for Atlético, and Toni Kroos for Madrid, the match finally went to those led by Argentine Diego “Cholo” Simeone.
An emboldened Atlético struck first in the 5th minute with a goal from Álvaro Morata. Thanks to a poisoned cross from Lino from the left, Morata scored his first goal against Real Madrid with a header that left goalkeeper Kepa with no options.
The merenque team seemed without options and lost in the game, something that was evident with a second arrival from Atleti in the 17th minute. Again from the left, Saúl took the Madrid defense and sent a cross that was met with a header from the French, who had not scored against Real Madrid since February 9, 2019.
With these two blows, Madrid seems to have woken up and began to send warnings like those of Croatian Luka Modric, who sent a volley that went over the goal defended by Oblak in the 22nd minute. Camavinga and Valverde also tried, but the shot from French went to a corner kick that Kroos took and with which the Uruguayan sent a header that was finally stopped by Colchonero goalkeeper Oblak.
Madrid’s attempts paid off in the 35th minute thanks to German Toni Kroos. The midfielder received the ball with his left leg in front of the area, masterfully changed it to his right leg and sent a shot that was impossible for Oblak to save and to reduce the score.
At the end of the first half, Madrud had a shot at the far post from David Alaba that hit the post and ended up defining Camavinga, but the goal was annulled due to an offside by Rüdiger at the beginning of the play, although he had not intervened in the same
Already in the second half, Morata hit quickly again and with another header he made it 3-1 for Atlético thanks to another assist from Saúl.
Tchuamení sent a shot in the 65th minute from outside the area that passed near Oblak’s right goal. Rudiger and Valverde also tried from long distance, but Madrid showed no other options.
In this way, the whites have accumulated 151 victories in the history of confrontations with Atlético, a team that has won the derby 73 times. On the other hand, 70 derbies have ended in a draw.
