A 34-year-old man, a patient at a psychiatric hospital in Pembroke Pines, Florida, attacked his roommate and gouged out his eyes during a fight, which lasted at least seven minutes.

The information was released this Monday by the local police, although the incident occurred last Friday around 4:45 pm, published WPLG Local 10.

Reinaldo Uranga Bermeosolo, who was admitted by court order to the South Florida State Hospital, was detained.

Pembroke Pines police officers indicated that Bermeosolo and the victim had a verbal argument that ended in physical attacks.

The detainee, according to the officers, continuously hit the other patient in the face and then threw him to the floor, where he continued hitting him with his fists until he finally put out his eyes.

According to the publication of WPLG Local 10the police indicated that a man who was nearby realized what was happening, so he alerted the staff of the psychiatric hospital.

Doctors called 911 about an hour later.

The nurses, according to the arrest report, put ice on the patient’s wounds and handed him over to paramedics, who transported him to Memorial Regional Hospital. There they could not recover his eyes and they declared him total loss of vision.

Pembroke Pines Police Chief Christian S. Rogers said they will investigate the reasons why the room was not being monitored.

An officer from the city’s Fire Department said that the detainee was sitting in a chair outside the room when the first responders arrived and that his attitude was one of indifference. Now, he is being held without bail and is charged with aggravated assault.

“He meets the criteria of the Florida Mental Health Law and should be considered a threat to others if he does not receive treatment,” the arrest report states.

According to the perpetrator himself, the fight started over a towel on the bedroom door.
