On Monday, Senator Bob Menéndez stated that he will not resign his position in the Senate, in addition to trying to justify the possession of $480,000 dollars among his clothes and in envelopes at his residence in New Jersey.

The Democrat said that he has been withdrawing money from his savings account for 30 years, but Menéndez did not explain how he obtained the gold bars whose existence was revealed by prosecutor Damian Williams, of the Southern District Court of New York.

“For more than 30 years I have withdrawn thousands of dollars in cash from my savings accounts, which I keep for emergencies,” he said without saying anything about the gold bars.

According to prosecutor Williams, the bars are valued at at least $150,000. The images show that they came from the Swiss Bank, but Menéndez has not explained how he acquired them.

Prosecutor Williams also said $70,000 was found in a safe deposit box, apparently belonging to Menendez’s wife, Nadine.

As part of the justification for the money found in his home, Menéndez said that he had withdrawn money from his account using the confiscation of money in Cuba as an argument. It should be remembered that the senator’s parents are refugees from that country.

Senator Menéndez has also not explained other properties, including a Mecedes-Benz that he would have received in exchange for using his power to benefit businessmen Wael “Will” Hana, José Uribe and Fred Daibe.

The Democrat, who temporarily left the presidency of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is also accused of benefiting the Egyptian government.

There are more and more voices against Menéndez, including that of the other senator from New Jersey, Cory Booker, who asked him to resign, clarifying that this did not mean a way to assume guilt.

Menéndez said that this is an attack by his political enemies, who want to “silence” him and have rushed to judge him before facing trial.
