Mohammed Rahman, a 67-year-old religious leader, was run over and killed in the Bronx (NYC) while walking between his home and the mosque to lead prayers on Monday.
He was hit by a drugged man who was speeding, according to the NYPD. Victor Ramos, 27, was arrested as a suspect at the scene, reported Pix11.
There is no stop sign, no red light, no crosswalk… They have to do something. “I don’t want to see more deaths on this block.”
Rahman, a native of Bangladesh, died instantly, leaving a widow, seven children and 18 grandchildren. He was hit as he was crossing Castle Hill Road near Turnbull Avenue at 9pm on Monday, he detailed. DailyNews.
Investigators said Ramos was high on drugs and his license had already been suspended. He now faces a half-dozen charges, including vehicular manslaughter. “We want the worst punishment the person can receive so that no one else can lose their family member,” said Saif Uddin, the victim’s son.
Ashim Chanda, a neighbor of the family, said he has emailed the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) since 2020 asking to make Castle Hill Road safer, and is still waiting. “There is no stop sign, no red light, no crosswalk… They have to do something. “I don’t want to see any more deaths on this block.”
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
In a similar case, last month 3 children and an adult died when a drugged driver crashed their vehicle on Long Island (NY).
New York authorities remember that there is zero tolerance for drivers who drive at excess speed and/or under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
