Several customers who purchased lottery scratch-off tickets at a store in the city of Gladwin, Michigan, discovered that the tickets had already been scratched off by the worker, named Jennifer Wallace.
The woman is now facing serious charges.
The Sukh 21 liquor store, located east of the town of Gladwin, generated 19 customer complaints to the Michigan Lottery. In June, an investigator visited the establishment to investigate these matters.
“At the lottery, we have a security division that handles all types of cases involving lottery tickets,” said Michigan Lottery spokesman Jake Harris.
Initially, the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office was tasked with reviewing complaints filed by Sukh 21 Liquor customers.
Sheriff Mike Shea mentioned that his department has received complaints about ticket tampering and that complaints have also been filed with the Michigan Lottery Commission.
Investigators think Wallace discreetly scratched off some of the tickets before selling them. Apparently, he claimed the prizes on the tickets that won and then resold the tickets that didn’t win anything.
Police say Jennifer Wallace, 41, a former employee of the store, now faces felony charges of embezzlement of more than $1,000 and larceny, both felonies.
