Mexican authorities have made a discovery in the state of Zacatecas, located in the north-central part of the country: six lifeless bodies, along with a young survivor, in connection with the alleged kidnapping of seven teenagers, most of whom are minors.
The State Attorney General’s Office (FJGE) of Zacatecas issued an official statement revealing the worrying details of the incident, according to CNN. According to the document, a young man, whose identity has not been revealed, was found alive but with various injuries.
Currently, the young man receives medical care in the state capital, under the careful protection of security personnel.
The location of the discovery is described as “remote and inaccessible, with no existing roads leading to it.” Six lifeless bodies of young men were located at the scene, whose identities remain unknown pending new identification procedures.
Although some local media have suggested that the bodies could belong to the other missing teenagers, the Prosecutor’s Office has stressed that they cannot confirm if the deceased include all the young people who were kidnapped last Sunday.
According to witness accounts provided to the media, the alleged crime took place last Sunday when armed individuals attacked the victims in the area called “El Potrerito” in the community of Malpaso, within the municipality of Villanueva.
The victims were gathered at the time of the attack. It should be noted that three of the young people are cousins, while the rest are close friends.
Among the missing, two are 18-year-old adults, while the others are between 14 and 17 years old. The situation has led relatives to block roads in protest, demanding justice for their loved ones.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has committed to investigating the matter and stated in a press conference: “In all cases, measures are taken and nothing is left uninvestigated. There is special attention,” according to the EFE agency.
Neither the president nor the Prosecutor’s Office have raised hypotheses about the motive for the kidnappings and subsequent discoveries. However, it is important to note that Zacatecas has been hit by a wave of violence associated with drug trafficking in recent times.
The authorities have stated that updates on the investigation will be communicated through official institutional channels as the proceedings develop. This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the current challenges posed by violence and criminal activities in certain regions of Mexico.
According to EFE, Zacatecas has gained notoriety for its high homicide rate, with 87 per 100,000 inhabitants reported in 2022. This figure significantly exceeds the national average of 25 and ranks second, only behind Colima’s rate of 113.
