Bryant González was arrested as a suspect in the stabbing death of Juan Luis Martínez on a street in the Bronx (NYC).
The motive for the crime is not clear. According to the family of the 44-year-old victim, he was attacked by “mistake” because he was not the target. González (36) was captured on Tuesday, two weeks after the September 12 homicide and had apparently accused Martínez of “harming” his son at the nearby “John F. Kennedy” high school.
González allegedly brutally stabbed Martínez outside the Marble Hill Houses (NYCHA) on W. 228th St. near Broadway, where the victim lived with his parents, his devastated family told The Associated Press. DailyNews.
When confronted, Martínez “was telling them that he had nothing to do with the incident,” said his father George Laboy. “The guy said he didn’t care about him and stabbed him… in front of my wife and 5-year-old granddaughter.” he said in shock.
The attacker stabbed Martínez several times and fled in a white Mercedes-Benz, according to police sources. Paramedics rushed the injured man to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, but were unable to save him.
Police caught Gonzalez on Tuesday morning and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
A recent NYPD report warned that fatal stabbings have increased 29% this year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.
