Former pitcher Curt Schilling revealed during his podcast, “The Curt Schilling Baseball Show,” that his former Boston Red Sox teammate Tim Wakefield was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Tim Wakefield’s journey through the MLB is a testament to his unwavering dedication, resilience and the indomitable spirit that defines him. For nearly two decades, he has mesmerized fans and hitters alike with his mesmerizing knuckleball.

The record of 200 wins, 180 losses, 4.41 ERA and 2,150 strikeouts are a testament to his enduring excellence and his ability to adapt to the challenges of the game.

Additionally, he became a beloved figure in Boston, where he embraced the history and passionate fan base of the Red Sox. His commitment to community service through initiatives such as the “Wakefield Warriors” demonstrated his character and his desire to give back.

Red Sox statement

The team released a statement Thursday after Schilling said on a podcast that Wakefield has brain cancer, prompting a wave of messages of solidarity toward Wakefield and criticism of Schilling.

“We are aware of statements and questions regarding the health of Tim and Stacy Wakefield,” the Red Sox said. “Unfortunately, this information was shared publicly without their permission. Their health is a very personal matter that they want to keep private while they deal with treatment and cope with this disease. “Tim and Stacy appreciate the encouragement and love they have always received and respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”

For his part, Schilling was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and later said he was in remission. He was enshrined in the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2012, but failed to be inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame in 2022, his final year of eligibility, garnering 58.6% of the vote, well below the 75% necessary.
