The food we eat before and during a flight is digested differently at higher altitudes, so we have to pay attention to the food we eat.

Arriving at the airport and eating a snack before boarding is very common, but it requires special attention because it affects energy levels during the trip and upon reaching the destination.

There are five foods and drinks that travelers are advised to avoid to prevent discomfort, fatigue and other effects of altitude, according to nutrition expert Ryan Davidson of the cleaning company Raw Juicery.

Due to their fructose content and high fiber content, eating apples causes gas and bloating. It can be consumed “in the 24 hours before a flight, it is advisable to avoid them, since the 4 to 5 grams of fiber per serving can cause stomach bloating when flying.”

Coffee

Davidson explains to The New York Post that coffee acts as a diuretic and dehydrates, which can lead to multiple trips during the flight; You should avoid drinking coffee until two hours before the flight.

Alcoholic beverages

It is not advisable to drink alcoholic beverages before the flight, because the body does not process alcohol at altitude. He explains that the pressure in the cabin and the decrease in oxygen levels in the blood make it difficult for the body to process alcohol. The nutritionist indicates that the effects of alcohol and the symptoms of dehydration will be felt more quickly.

Tap water

When it comes to drinking water, the safest, most advisable option is bottled water; instead of the airplane faucet. Although airlines strictly comply with regulations, water is stored in tanks on the plane and contamination can occur.

The ideal is to “stay away from any liquid that may come from a storage tank. It could be anything, like hot chocolates, teas and coffees,” he explains.

Gum

Although a piece of gum can be a solution to the nerves and to control the cabin pressure and make their ears pop. “Chewing gum can increase the risk of bloating and extra gas by opening your mouth to chew and swallow more air. The artificial sweeteners in gum can also increase your chances of having excess gas,” adds Davidson.
