Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein (California) died at age 90, she was the oldest congresswoman.
In Feinstein’s final years, she faced health and memory problems, which even raised questions from her colleagues about whether she should remain in Congress.
Feinstein did not want to stay in the Senate much longer, as she planned to retire at the end of her term in 2024.
California Governor Gavin Newsom must name a temporary successor to Feinstein, who was born in San Francisco, in this important position.
Feinstein helped pave the way for women in politics and Congress. She was elected as the first president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978.
The senator helped draft and defended the assault weapons ban of 1994, a landmark bill that lasted for nearly 10 years. It was signed by Bill Clinton.
Feinstein was one of the promoters of the AMBER alert network at the national level and maintained her fight on behalf of women, to reduce violence.
