Due to heavy rain and flooding risks, the New York City Department of Emergency Management (NYCEM) issued an alert in effect all day today through Saturday.
LaGuardia Airport closed Terminal A shortly before 11 a.m. and several Subway lines were suspended due to track flooding, including routes 2/3/4/5 and D/F in Brooklyn, so far the hardest hit borough. .
C train service was completely suspended, as was the 6 line in the Bronx. The MTA said system-wide service would be “extremely limited” during the day, he noted. NBC News.
“Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday as flash flooding affected neighborhoods throughout the city” and other nearby areas, reported The New York Times.
“I am declaring a state of emergency in New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley due to the extreme rainfall we are seeing across the region. Please take steps to stay safe and remember to never attempt to travel through flooded roads,” Governor Hochul announced.
“All New Yorkers should exercise caution,” NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iscol said in a statement. “If you must travel, consider using public transport and allow additional travel time, and if you must drive, do not enter flooded roads. “If you live in a basement apartment, especially in a flood-prone area, be prepared to move to higher ground.”
Flights in the area are also being affected. Subway and airplane passengers are encouraged to check MTA and airline updates before leaving home.
Most of this week, the first of fall, it has been raining in New York. At the moment there is a forecast of precipitation until at least tomorrow afternoon.
