The United States government banned the entry of a hundred Nicaraguan officials for supporting the repression of Daniel Ortega’s regime against civil society, Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, reported this Friday in a statement.

With this decision, US authorities have blocked the visas of almost 1,000 people linked to Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, to travel to the country.

Blinken justified this new round of sanctions by the closure of the Central American University and the Central American Institute of Business Administration Business School, decreed by the Nicaraguan authorities.

The head of US diplomacy accused the Ortega regime of singling out independent academic institutions, altering the dreams of the citizens of that country who seek a better future.

The State Department imposed visa restrictions on 100 Nicaraguan municipal officials for their role in supporting the Ortega regime’s attacks on human rights and fundamental freedoms and its repression of civil society organizations.

The Joe Biden government official took the opportunity to demand that Nicaragua release political prisoners in the country, including Bishop Rolando Álvarez, who remains imprisoned because he refused at the beginning of the year to be exiled to the United States.

“The United States continues to work with the international community to promote accountability for people who undermine democracy in Nicaragua,” Blinken said.
