The Border Patrol will continue to monitor illegal crossings from Mexico into the United States, despite the government shutdown scheduled for the weekend due to the depletion of the federal budget, the Department of Homeland Security reported this Friday.
“Our Customs and Border Protection Agency personnel will continue their mission protecting our border and ports of entry, prioritizing our national security,” said Blas Núñez Neto, undersecretary of Border Policy, in a press conference.
The border, the US official emphasized, “will not and would not be” open for irregular immigration, regardless of the foreseeable closure of the administration due to the absence of an agreement between Democratic and Republican legislators.
The Undersecretary of Border Policy recalled that the government of Democrat Joe Biden has reinforced the consequences for the crossings of undocumented immigrants. This, since last May, when Title 42, the expulsion policy that was applied due to the coronavirus pandemic, was lifted, EFE published.
Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan and Haitian migrants have since been expelled to Mexico. While the rest are returned to their countries and face a possible five-year veto from re-entering the United States.
More than 253,000 people have been deported to 152 countries since May 12, the official said.
Núñez Neto asked people who hope to reach the United States not to do so irregularly. Otherwise, he recommended requesting an appointment online to request a humanitarian permit.
