FC Cincinnati made history this Saturday by managing to secure the first MLS Supporters’ Shield in its history, establishing itself as the best regular season team in American soccer.
Cincinnati achieved the feat after achieving an important 2-3 away victory against Toronto FC, which allowed it to mark a distance of 11 points from the second place, with three games remaining to be played.
The feat came thanks to the American-Mexican Brandon Vázquez, who managed to score a double that Aaron Boupendza scored near the end with the third and final goal.
For Toronto, which has had a terrible season and is bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Canadian of Colombian origin Jonathan Osorio scored the two goals.
Cincinnati, which debuted in the MLS in 2019 and is coached by Pat Noonan, has been the great dominator of the league this season and will reach the playoffs with a lot of confidence and as the outstanding leader of the East.
Acosta has been the main figure of the Ohio team with 15 goals, which places him as the top scorer in the MLS this year along with Hany Mukhtar of Nashville and Giorgos Giakoumakis of Atlanta United (both also with 15 goals awaiting the what happens on this day).
Cincinnati thus took over from Los Angeles FC (LAFC), the team led by Mexican Carlos Vela that last year won both the MLS Supporters’ Shield and the MLS Cup (this title goes to the winner of the playoffs).
