Xavier Estrada Fernández, former Spanish referee, slightly revealed the power struggle that exists in the Spanish first division. As he explained in the program “ElDesmarque Mediodía”, Estrada did not whistle again at Real Madrid after expelling Cristiano Ronaldo at the time.

The former referee talked about what it means to whistle at the big teams in the Spanish championship: “The referees are conditioned. Refereeing your neighborhood team is not the same as refereeing a big team like Barça, Madrid or Atlético de Madrid,” Estrada said.

“If you make a mistake, the Committee sanctions you as it did with Munuera Montero in the last game, who had just had a refrigerator,” explained the former referee.

“I have an example of mine from 2009 when I sent off Cristiano Ronaldo, that season I did not referee Real Madrid again. You know that there is media impact and that you have to tread very carefully when making a decision,” said the former European football judge.

The match that Estrada Fernández spoke about was the one the white team had against Almería in 2009. On that occasion Cristiano saw a double yellow after taking off his shirt and attacking an opponent.
