SAN JUAN – The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (NEPR) approved a new increase in the cost of electric service of 23 cents per kilowatt hour for residential subscribers to begin from this Sunday to next December.

As explained by the entity in a document, on September 20, Luma Energy – from the transmission and distribution system of the electrical system on the island – requested an increase of 4 cents per kilowatt hour in the customers’ bill.

Currently, the cost of electric service for a customer consuming 800 kilowatts is 20 cents per kilowatt.

According to the NEPR, the factor proposal originally presented by Luma would have represented a cost of 24 cents per kilowatt for a customer with a consumption of 800 kilowatts, representing a bill of $194.61.

The NEPR also said that Genera PR, in charge of power generation, the cost of fuel used by generation plants in July and August was 20% higher than expected.

This, according to the agency, was due to “the impact of the global increase in fuel prices and the higher than expected energy demand for this quarter.”

The NEPR explained that the international price of oil increased more than 28% during the summer months, reaching $90 per barrel compared to $70 on July 1.
