The Mexican fighter Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez managed to defend his four super middleweight world titles this Saturday after defeating Jermell Charlo in a fight held at the T-Mobile Arena in the city of Las Vegas.
Although Canelo Álvarez’s victory could have been certified in the seventh round, when he sent Charlo to the canvas, in the end it was the judges who were in charge of deciding the triumph of the Guadalajara by unanimous decision: 119-108, 118-109 and 118- 109.
Dressed in a yellow Dolce Gabbana jacket and accompanied by the Mexican rapper and countryman Santa Fe Klan, Canelo Álvarez entered the ring to face Charlo who remained alone until he landed in the ring with a sweater made of shiny hoodies.
Already at the beginning of the fight, a first round of study between Canelo Álvarez and Charlo was what was seen the most on the canvas, with very little exchange of blows between the Mexican and the American.
The next three minutes brought greater emotions from both fighters. At first, Canelo connected to Charlo’s head and chest, and Charlo responded with a quick exchange of blows.
The third round began with a great ovation from the public present at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, who constantly shouted “Canelo, Canelo”, to support the man from Guadalajara who decided to respond to the support again with direct punches to the humanity of his rival.
Between the fourth and fifth chapter the exchange of blows reigned, with the fighter from Guadalajara taking the lead with blows to the liver and jaw of Charlo, who responded with a left blow directly to the rival’s face.
The arrival of the sixth round meant the sample of what the entire public was waiting for: exchange of blows left and right. Canelo Álvarez locked Charlo against the ropes, and once he was released from the pressure, he responded with a combination of blows that shook the red man.
But the dominance that Canelo Álvarez had had throughout the fight was present again in the next act with a direct combination to the face that he sealed with a right hand to send Charlo to the canvas, all while the audience chanted “Mexico, Mexico.”
The ninth round could be considered the best of the entire fight for Charlo, who was able to impact Canelo Álvarez’s body up to four times, but without any significance because the Mexican ended up winning the fight after two rounds of mere formality.
In the end, it was the judges who were responsible for deciding the fate of the fight with which Canelo Álvarez achieved his 60th victory in professional boxing, leaving his historical record at 60-2-2.
