Representative Jamaal Bowman admitted Saturday that he set off a fire alarm in the United States Congress while in the House of Representatives, lawmakers, except for a group of radical Republicans, accelerated the pace to approve the government funding bill. for 45 days to avoid its closure.

According to the Democrat, it was a confusion and he assured that at no time did he try to delay the vote.

“I want to personally clear up the confusion surrounding today’s events. Today, as I was rushing to vote, I came to a door that is normally open for voting, but was not opening today. “I am ashamed to admit that I activated the fire alarm, mistakenly thinking it would open the door,” the congressman said in a statement he published in X.

He said he regrets the situation and apologized for any confusion that may have been caused.

“But I want to make it very clear that it was not me who, in any way, tried to delay the vote. It was exactly the opposite: I was urgently trying to get to a vote,” she emphasized.

Bowman said he finally expressed his will and joined colleagues in the bipartisan effort to keep the government open. He added that he met after the vote with the Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police, at their request, and explained to them what had happened.

“My hope is that no one takes advantage of this more than it was. I am working hard every day, including today, to do my job, do it well, and deliver for my constituents. Peace and love,” she concluded.
