A traffic accident in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, left at least 10 migrants dead and 17 seriously injured this Sunday, when the vehicle in which they were traveling overturned in the municipality of Pijijiapan, reported the Mexican National Migration Institute. The incident occurred 150 kilometers from the border city of Tapachula.

According to information from Civil Protection, the victims were Cuban migrants who were traveling in a Ford Super Duty unit, without license plates. In the vehicle, a total of 35 foreigners were traveling in precarious conditions, avoiding detection by the authorities.

The red vehicle was located on the side of the road and the bodies were near it. The National Immigration Institute of Mexico indicated that the driver, who fled, was speeding, lost control of the unit and overturned.

Of the 17 people who were injured, 16 of them were transferred to the Pijijiapan City Hospital and another was channeled to the Hospital of the Huixtla municipality. The transfer of two minors to the Pediatric Hospital in Tuxtla Gutiérrez was also managed.

The National Migration Institute said that it will establish communication with the consular authorities with the aim of beginning the administrative procedure for the repatriation of the bodies to Cuba.

A report from the EFE agency indicates that, in desperation to leave Tapachula to reach Mexico City, migrants choose to pay these types of units that transport them illegally and unsafely. Thus, they risk their lives in an attempt to avoid going through the difficult immigration processes offered by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
