A tragedy struck the Unidad Nacional neighborhood of Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, when the roof of the Santa Cruz church collapsed during a mass, causing a grim toll of victims.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least five lives were lost and several people were injured and trapped under the rubble.

The incident took place on the afternoon of this Sunday, October 1, during what was supposed to be a solemn religious service, according to Mexican media Radio Formula.

So far three deaths have been officially confirmed, including two women and a baby. Ciudad Madero Mayor Adrián Oseguera has suggested that the death toll could unfortunately increase, although he stopped short of providing an exact count.

Immediately after the collapse, a frantic rescue operation was launched, with numerous people trapped beneath the fallen structure. First responders, supported by local residents, rallied to reinforce the compromised building and remove those trapped inside.

A security camera managed to capture the heartbreaking moment when the roof of the Church of the Holy Cross succumbed to its structural failure.

The calamity occurred shortly before 3:00 pm local time, while a baptism ceremony was taking place inside the church.

Tamaulipas authorities quickly mobilized emergency services to the scene to begin vital rescue operations.

While two people, a man and a woman, have been successfully rescued from the rubble, serious concerns remain that other people may still be buried under the collapsed structure.

A coalition of agencies converged on the scene, including the Mexican Army, Navy, Red Cross, Civil Protection, Pemex and Firefighters, along with dedicated rescuers. Some teams arrived equipped with heavy machinery to navigate the rubble and carry out rescue missions.

In a show of solidarity, dozens of civilians joined forces with emergency services, providing wooden beams to strengthen the structure and mitigate the risk of new collapses.

The church’s pastor took on the crucial role of coordinating rescue efforts, working tirelessly to ensure the safety of parishioners trapped after the roof collapse of the Santa Cruz church in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas.
