A violent school episode shocked the Michigan educational community last Thursday, when a 15-year-old student at Southwestern Classical Academy, a public high school in Flint, was arrested and charged with two counts of felony assault after a metal chair was thrown at her. at the head of his teacher.
In the images that went viral on social networks, two students are seen insulting each other from opposite sides of the classroom, while the teacher was trying to put things in order.
When the fight continued, one of the students took a metal chair and threw it forcefully towards the teacher, who had her back turned. The chair hit the teacher’s head, who fell to the ground and remained motionless.
A school resource officer was called to intervene and found the teacher injured on the floor, said Flint Police Chief Terence Green. The two students involved in the fight were taken to a youth center.
The teacher had to be sent to a hospital for treatment for her head injury, but was released the next day. District Superintendent Kevelin Jones said the teacher is “doing well” and she plans to return to the classroom.
Jones expressed his rejection of the “unacceptable act of violence” and assured that the district is investigating what happened. He also said the student who threw the chair will be held accountable under the law and the district’s code of conduct.
“We are committed to ensuring that our schools are safe and conducive to learning for all students, and we take this responsibility very seriously,” Jones wrote.
Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig stated that the video “perfectly captures the sad state of education in Michigan: no sense of order or direction, no respect for teachers and, worst of all, no learning.”
Craig linked lack of education to increased crime, unemployment, and social disorder. Comedian Rob Schneider also criticized the attack, attributing it to “WOKE tolerance.”
