Mayor Adams of New York City is taking steps to address the immigration crisis by embarking on a four-day trip to Latin America. His mission: to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to this complex issue.
Mayor Adams’ trip begins in Mexico City, where he will participate in the North Capital Forum, a conference addressing key American challenges, including economic development, innovation and national security.
From the Mexican capital, the mayor of New York will travel to Puebla, east of Mexico City, and then to Ecuador, according to NY Daily News.
In Ecuador, Mayor Adams will reach out to local officials to learn about their “asylee integration” programs, seeking information about the experiences of asylum seekers.
His itinerary concludes in Colombia, where he plans to meet with local authorities and visit the Darién Gap, a region along the border with Panama frequently crossed by migrants en route to the United States. Mayor Adams is expected to return to New York City late Saturday.
The purpose of Mayor Adams’ trip
The primary goal of Mayor Adams’ Latin American tour is to build relationships, gain a first-hand understanding of the journeys made by asylum seekers heading to the United States, and engage with local and national leaders to assess the realities that contribute to the increase in asylum seekers in the United States.
It is worth noting that Mayor Adams covers his own expenses during his visits to Ecuador and Colombia. The costs associated with his trip to Mexico are being covered by the United States-Mexico Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening ties between the two nations.
Joining Mayor Adams on this mission are Ed Mermelstein, the Commissioner of International Affairs, and Emanuel Castro, the Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs, who also cover their own expenses.
This trip comes after Mayor Adams’ budget office issued a directive to all city agencies, emphasizing that taxpayer funds cannot be used to travel outside of New York City due to concerns about the impact prosecutor of the immigration crisis.
While discussions about how to address the crisis have drawn attention, it is important to note that the Adams administration continues to provide housing and services to more than 61,000 immigrants, predominantly from Latin American countries, who seek refuge from poverty and violence in their countries of origin. origin.
