The United States government this Monday demanded that Mexico dismantle more fentanyl laboratories as proof that the collaboration against drug trafficking between both countries is working.
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the State Department, stated this in a press conference, in which he also recognized the high demand for drugs in his country, a problem that must be addressed.
“We recognize that we have a demand problem in the United States and that we have to take measures to reduce it. At the same time, we have to take action with our Mexican partners to combat trafficking and this includes the destruction of laboratories in Mexico and the capture of traffickers on the border and within Mexico,” he stated.
Miller stated that Joe Biden’s government wants there to be progress in these indicators and highlighted that both countries increased cooperation against synthetic drugs, EFE reported. He also confirmed that they will continue to do so because fentanyl is the number one cause of death among young Americans.
Antony Blinken, Secretary of State; Alejandro Mayorkas, of Homeland Security, and Attorney General Merrick Garland will travel to Mexico to participate on Thursday in a high-level dialogue on security between both countries.
At the center of the discussions is fentanyl, which, according to United States authorities, is manufactured by Mexican drug cartels with chemicals purchased in China.
The final product is trafficked to the United States, where more than 70,000 people died last year from overdoses with this powerful synthetic opioid.
