Last Saturday, one of the most anticipated fights of the year between Canelo Álvarez and Jermell Charlo took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The battle ended up being won by the Mexican by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.
However, for some people the fight was more marketing and money than boxing. One of those who had this controversial opinion was the former boxer Óscar de la Hoya, who called the presentation of both in the ring “super boring.”
“It was a super boring fight. Charlo only showed up to collect the check. And Canelo, as I said before, standing on quicksand throwing bombs. “He won easily,” the historic Mexican boxer commented on the fight.
On the other hand, “The Golden Boy” took the opportunity to call on boxing production companies and invite them to organize more high-caliber fights to encourage good boxing. “If we want boxing to survive, if we want boxing to prosper, we need super fights all the time, fighters must fight each other.” De la Hoya explained through her social networks.
“We have to unite. Promoters, Eddie Hearn, Al Haymon, Bob Arum, whoever is there. I am calling you to work together. Let’s get together, the power of all our minds together, and think something because boxing can die. Let’s do it,” the promoter concluded.
Isn’t de la Hoya’s strategy appropriate?
Despite making this call to promoters to organize big fights, the specialized site Boxing News 24 assures that this tactic does not suit the promoters, as they would not risk their best talents losing their belts to such strong rivals.
Even the same site assures that de la Hoya himself does not expose his clients to “big fights.” Cases like Ryan García, Jaime Munguía and Gilberto Ramírez.
What is known about Canelo Álvarez’s next fight?
At the end of the fight against Jermell Charlo, Canelo assured that: “There is no one who can beat this Canelo,” stating that he is in an excellent sporting moment. Given this confidence, the Mexican wants to continue extending his record of 60 victories so far and his next fight is already being planned.
As part of his contract, Canelo will return to the ring on May 5, however it is unknown for now who the rival may be. Some ask for a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, while others assure that it could be against David Benavidez. The truth is that as Canelo himself said, “I don’t care who he will be with.”
